A French animal rights organization has launched a campaign to get the Chinese to stop serving dog in time for the Beijing Olympics this summer.
One Voice said the practice of preparing canines for the pot often involves slow and brutal methods in which the animal is beaten to death, boiled alive or hung up to bleed while still breathing.
“This trade is widespread in China, even in large cities, although in Beijing, the authorities are trying to push it outside the city ahead of the Olympics,” said Muriel Arnal, president and founder of One Voice.
Several years ago, the backstreet butchers’ targets of choice were Saint Bernards, but now the favourite dogs for slaughter are German shepherds, it said.
Stolen pets, some of them still bearing collars, were also being killed, it said.
There’s awkward. There’s really awkward. And then there’s “going to eat dog paws and finding your recently lost dog’s collar on an $80 plate of dog-based food”. Oh Munchie. I knew your name would end in your ironic death one day.
At least dogs grow back paws, right? Like worms? These dogs are all still okay right? I probably should have learned my lesson when my dog’s balls didn’t grow back after that tragic landscaping accident we had. By which I mean that time I got high and ran around with hedge clippers and told my dog that I was going to “make him into a pretty lady.” 2006 was a crazy time.
