Jun.21.2007 Finally, we’ll know if Power Ranger skills translate to MMA
In the biggest story of the year that could arguably change the face of Mixed Martial Arts, Jason David Frank, better known as the Green and White Ranger of Power Rangers lore, will be entering the illustrious MMA rings of Illinois Cage Fighting to face the always dangerous Ron “The Badger (what?)” McMasters.
[Frank] doesn’t fight monsters anymore. Now, he fights in a cage.
“I just like to fight,” Frank said. “It’s always been in my blood.”After years of restrictions from fighting because of contracts with Disney, Frank is now getting a chance to show his skills. But Frank said he’s doing this for more than the rush in a fight.
“I don’t need to fight for money like all these other guys,” he said. “I just do it because I like to.”
Although Frank will get paid, most amateurs don’t receive money for fights, said Jim Thomas, president of Fists of Glory, the organization sponsoring the event.
Truly a historic event, albeit not one without precedent for stars of shows catering to young people. Sasha Mitchell, better known as Cody from Step by Step, was a Championship kickboxer. Dustin Diamond, whom everyone knows as Screech of Saved by the Bell fame, beat up Horshack on Fox’s Celebrity Boxing. And Bronson Pinchot of Perfect Strangers once killed a drifter with her bare hands.
No word on whether any Dragon Flutes will be allowed in the match-up, which could cripple the efforts of the currently undefeated Frank. Additionally, there’s a decent chance that Rita Repulsa may throw her giant staff down to Ron “The Badger(badger? Seriously?)” McMasters to make him grow to unequivocal size. It is unclear as to whether that would be allowed within the bylaws of Illinois Mixed Martial Arts, though their rules do explicitly state that:
No Zord, be it Dragon nor Mega, will be allowed to compete within the confines of Illinois Mixed Martial Arts competitions.
