Feb.20.2007 Donut Burger Less Than Sum of Its Parts, Not Sitting Well
Last night, in honor of Presidents’ Day, the Blog of Hilarity World Headquarters served Luther Burgers for dinner. For those unfamiliar, a Luther Burger is a bacon cheeseburger with a Krispy Kreme donut for a bun. Also known more simply as a donut burger or doughnut burger, the Luther is the namesake of the late, great singer Luther Vandross. According to legend, he enjoyed said delicacy at the Georgia restaurant where it was first served. According to a different legend, he invented it himself. It looks something like this:

With Lincoln in our wallets and Taft in our hearts, we purchased ground beef and bacon from the supermarket, and donuts from the local 7-Eleven. The Boar’s Head brand bacon shrank on the pan, producing 6 deep red, crispy strips. The burgers were grilled beneath a white George Foreman grill, their grease spilling into a small white plate at its base. Said burgers were placed on the glazed sides of sliced open donuts. The bacon and cheese (lactose free for yours truly) flopped atop the meat, and the entire monster was reintroduced to the grill for another minute. How was it, you ask? Good question.
My first sentence after my first bite involved the words “this,” “is,” and “gross.” The donut was super sweet, and a little overpowering. The burger was fine enough, and the cheese and bacon got along reasonably well. As I worked my way across the Donut Plains, I found myself comparing this Luther to McDonalds’ McGriddle, another artery-busting chimera of a sandwich. Like the pancake sandwich, something about the donut burgers (at least as we made them) did not quite work. The Krispy Kremes and ground beef never truly melded. As my partner in this experiment attested, it was like eating a burger with a donut on the side. It just was not all that great, and certainly not worth 1,000 calories and 45 grams of fat. I’m glad that I had this experience, but I don’t see myself repeating it.
Also, about 20 minutes after finishing the burger, I felt a dull headache that lingered throughout the evening. I figure that probably is not such a good thing.
