Dec.04.2006 Police order Black men to rap; Black men shockingly able to do so
Filed under “Stories of Absolutely Awesome Harmless Racism,” Tempe police ordered a couple of Black men to rap under the threat of them receiving a littering ticket if they don’t comply.
The segment at issue was part of “Tempe StreetBeat,” which followed several police officers on patrol.
It showed a sergeant pulling over two men in the parking lot of the Arizona Mills mall. He first asks for a name and ID from the driver and then asks the two men if they know what the fine is for littering.
The officer then tells the men that they can avoid getting a littering ticket “if the two of you just do a little rap about — what do you want to do a rap about? Littering? About the dangers of littering.” The two men agree and each performs a short rap, laughing afterward.
Sure, some people will cry foul over this. “Oh, it’s racist to have Black men rap,” they’ll say. I say that this is how the white man can finally give the Black man reparations. Every Black man gets one “rap out of jail free” card that will keep them from getting a fine and/or jail time, so long as they deliver some “ill” punchlines and perhaps a “phat” beat or two. These cops…kind of racist (and idiotic for putting this on TV in some wacky cable access show when you’re an authority figure)…but perhaps they’ve found their own way to cope with white guilt.
The only problem I have with this is what if a Black guy is caught with 40 pounds of cocaine but had used his “rap out of jail free” card to get out of a jay-walking ticket. Boy would his face be red…dish brown.
